Cash App Settled 3 Different Lawsuits. Here’s What Each One Pays Per Person.

Cash App has been hit with three separate class action settlements since 2022: a data breach, spam referral texts, and a CFPB enforcement action. The data breach settlement pays up to $2,500 for documented losses. The spam texts settlement paid $394.36 per person. The CFPB action sends automatic payments to fraud victims. Here’s the full breakdown of what each one pays, who gets paid, and whether that check in your mailbox is real.

Settlement #1: The Cash App data breach ($15M)

In December 2021, a former Cash App employee downloaded reports containing sensitive data on approximately 8.2 million current and former U.S. customers without authorization. The data included full names, brokerage account numbers, portfolio values, and stock trading activity tied to Cash App Investing accounts.

Block, Inc. (Cash App’s parent company) disclosed the breach in April 2022 and agreed to pay $15 million to settle the resulting class action. The case is formally called Geschke v. Block, Inc., and the official settlement site is cashappsecuritysettlement.com.

Who was eligible?

  • Current or former Cash App Investing users in the United States
  • Whose data was accessed by the former employee in December 2021
  • Block sent notification letters to affected users in April 2022 (check your records)

How much does it pay per person?

Up to $2,500 for documented losses

Unauthorized charges, credit monitoring costs, or lost wages spent dealing with the breach. Receipts and documentation required.

Up to $75 for time spent (no documentation)

Self-certify up to 3 hours at $25/hour if you spent time dealing with the breach but have no documented financial losses.

The claim deadline was November 18, 2024. Filing is now closed. The court granted Final Approval on March 27, 2025. Payments are being distributed throughout 2026.

Getting a Cash App settlement check? It’s real.

If you filed a valid claim before November 2024, you should be getting paid now. Multiple people have posted about receiving checks in mid-2026. One r/classactions thread from June 2026 started with “Anyone else receive this Cash App settlement email?” and the original poster updated: “I called and they said my check was for $550.” Another user on r/CashApp posted: “So I got the settlement check today it was 299 hopefully yall get yours soon.” (r/classactions thread, r/CashApp thread)

The checks come from JND Legal Administration, the court-appointed settlement administrator. The amounts vary widely depending on the type of claim filed. Someone who documented $500 in fraud charges will get a larger payment than someone who filed a basic time-compensation claim.

If you got a notice but not a check yet, give it time. Payment distribution for a settlement this size takes months. The administrator processes claims in batches.

Settlement #2: Cash App spam referral texts ($12.5M, $394 per person)

This is a completely separate case from the data breach. Bottoms v. Block, Inc. alleged that Cash App sent unsolicited referral text messages to phone numbers without prior express written consent, violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

The settlement fund was $12.5 million. Initial estimates projected payouts of $88 to $147 per person. But because fewer people filed claims than expected, the actual per-person award came out to $394.36, according to the official settlement site. The court granted Final Approval on December 2, 2025, and payments were processed in early 2026.

Who was eligible?

  • Received a Cash App referral or promotional text message without giving written consent
  • U.S. phone number, claim period through mid-2023
  • No proof required, self-certification only

Filing for this case is also closed. But the $394 per person outcome illustrates a pattern worth knowing: TCPA text message settlements tend to pay more per person than data breach settlements because the eligible class is narrower and fewer people file. The next similar case could pay just as well.

Settlement #3: The CFPB enforcement action (automatic payments)

In January 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau took enforcement action against Cash App, alleging the company failed to properly investigate fraud complaints, gave users inaccurate information about their rights, and made it deliberately difficult to dispute unauthorized transactions.

Cash App agreed to pay at least $120 million in redress to affected customers plus a $55 million civil penalty. Unlike the class action settlements, this one does not require you to file a claim. If you reported a fraud transaction to Cash App between 2016 and 2024 that was not properly resolved, Cash App was required to send you payment directly.

A Reddit thread from June 2026 on r/CashApp (r/CashApp) showed users receiving notices that said “Your Compensation Payment from Cash App is on the Way. We’re sending you a check as part of a settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.” Those are real payments, and no action is required on your end to receive one.

Do I need to do anything?

No. If you qualify, Cash App sends you a check automatically based on your account history. If you reported fraud to Cash App between 2016 and 2024, watch your mail for a check from Block, Inc. or a third-party payment processor.

Missed the deadlines? Here’s what to do next.

If you didn’t file for the data breach or spam texts settlement, you can’t go back now. But there are three things worth doing today:

1

Check your mail for CFPB checks

You don't need to file for the CFPB settlement. If you reported fraud to Cash App between 2016 and 2024, Cash App is required to pay you automatically. Keep an eye out for checks from Block, Inc.

2

Verify you are excluded, not just late

If you opted out of either class action, or if you are a class representative, you are excluded from those settlements and should have received separate notice. Check any old emails from Block or JND Legal Administration.

3

Get the Payout app so you don't miss the next one

The average active settlement on Payout pays $20 to $200. There are 97 open right now. Cash App has faced lawsuits in the past and will face them again. The only way to not miss the next one is to have a system.

Why the same company can pay $75 or $2,500 to different people

The Cash App data breach settlement has a wide range because it uses a tiered claims structure. People who can show real, documented financial harm (fraudulent charges on their accounts, money spent on identity protection services, hours lost to resolving fraud) get paid more. People who can only self-certify that they spent time dealing with the breach get the flat $25/hour rate, capped at 3 hours.

This is how most data breach settlements work. The fund is split between documented and undocumented claimants, with documented claimants paid first. If the documented claims don’t exhaust the fund, the remainder goes to the undocumented claimants pro-rata.

The spam texts settlement is different. Under TCPA law, each violating text is worth $500 to $1,500. That statutory damage amount anchors the settlement higher. That’s why the Bottoms settlement paid $394 per person while many data breach settlements pay $30 or less. The legal theory behind each case determines how much leverage plaintiffs have.

How to find other settlements you qualify for

Most people miss class action settlements for one reason: they never find out they qualified. Settlement administrators send notices, but emails get filtered as spam and postcards get thrown away as junk mail. If you had a Cash App Investing account in 2021 and didn’t see a notification, that’s probably what happened.

The Payout app fixes that by aggregating active settlements and matching you based on what you’ve used and purchased. You set up your profile once, and the app tells you when you qualify for something. There are 97 active settlements right now, covering everything from YouTube privacy to beef price-fixing to Krispy Kreme data breach.

If you want to do it manually, the most reliable sources are the Federal Trade Commission’s settlement page (ftc.gov/refunds), TopClassActions.com, and ClassAction.org. The drawback is that you have to check them regularly and figure out your own eligibility. The Payout app automates that entire process. See the full guide on finding settlements you qualify for.

Payout is a settlement-discovery app, not a law firm, and does not provide legal advice. It does not guarantee eligibility, claim approval, or specific payment amounts. Settlement amounts and eligibility are determined solely by settlement administrators and courts. All settlement data is sourced from official court documents and settlement websites.
