What is the Google privacy settlement about?

The Google Assistant Privacy Litigation (In re Google Assistant Privacy Litigation, Case No. 4:19-cv-04286) resolves a class action alleging that Google secretly recorded private conversations through unintended 'False Accept' activations — meaning Google Assistant activated and began recording even when users had not said the wake word 'Hey Google.' Those recordings were then allegedly disclosed to third-party language review vendors without users' knowledge or consent. Google denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle for $68 million.

The settlement covers two classes: the Device Purchaser Class (anyone who bought a Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, or Pixel device in the U.S. between May 18, 2016 and March 19, 2026) and the Privacy Class (anyone whose Google Assistant conversations were recorded or disclosed during that period, regardless of device ownership). Device owners can earn up to 4 points per device (capped at 3 devices) plus 1 Privacy point; the value of each point translates to an estimated $18–$56 per device owned. Privacy-only class members can claim $2–$10. The final approval hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2026.
