What is the Amazon ftc enforcement settlement about?
The Amazon Prime FTC class action settlement resolves a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission alleging that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime memberships without their informed consent and deployed 'dark patterns' — confusing design choices — to prevent subscribers from canceling. The FTC alleged Amazon violated the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA) and the FTC Act by hiding material terms and making the cancellation process unnecessarily complicated.
Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement fund — one of the largest consumer refund settlements in FTC history — covering an estimated 35 million U.S. consumers who were charged for Prime memberships they may not have knowingly signed up for, or who were unable to cancel, between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025. No proof of purchase is required to file a claim.

- OR you attempted to cancel your Amazon Prime membership between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, through the online cancellation process but were unable to complete the cancellation or inadvertently accepted a 'save offer.'
- You used fewer than 10 Prime benefits during any 12-month period of your enrollment.
- Consumers who used three or fewer Prime benefits in any 12-month period may receive automatic payouts without needing to file a claim.
