What is the STIIIZY data breach settlement about?

The STIIIZY data breach class action settlement (In re: STIIIZY Inc. Data Breach Security Litigation) resolves a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit alleged that STIIIZY, a major cannabis brand and retailer, failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures, allowing an unauthorized third party to access sensitive customer data through a vendor used for point-of-sale processing in October 2024. STIIIZY publicly disclosed the breach on January 7, 2025. The compromised data may include names, addresses, dates of birth, government ID numbers, payment card information, and medical cannabis card details. STIIIZY has not admitted wrongdoing.

The $2.95 million settlement covers individuals who received a data breach notification from STIIIZY or believe their information was compromised in the October 2024 incident. Class members can choose between two claim tiers: up to $7,500 for documented out-of-pocket losses such as unreimbursed bank fees, credit monitoring costs, or identity theft-related expenses (requires supporting documentation); or a proportional cash payment from the remaining settlement fund with no documentation required. California class members are entitled to double the pro rata share. The settlement also provides two years of credit monitoring and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. The claim deadline is September 10, 2026.
