Most people leave settlement money on the table

Billions of dollars in class action settlement funds go unclaimed every year, mostly because eligible people never hear about the case or assume filing is not worth it. Payout’s data shows the gap directly: of 107,701 users, 25,044 (23.3%) have filed at least one claim. The other three quarters have not filed yet, even though many qualify for open settlements right now.

The users who do claim are not one-and-done. Active claimers file about 3 settlements each (2.92 on average), which adds up to 73,076 claims across the base. Once someone files their first claim and sees the money is real, they tend to keep going.

How much settlements pay, and why proof matters less than you think

Individual payouts on the settlements Payout tracks run from about $16 (Poppi soda) to $500 (YouTube privacy), and people who file across several cases often clear $1,000 in a year. For a deeper breakdown, see the average class action settlement payout per person.

Methodology

Figures come from anonymized, aggregate Payout app data as of August 2026: 107,701 registered users, 25,044 of whom filed at least one claim, across a catalog of 112 class action settlements. State and age breakdowns use the 77,334 users who shared their state and the users 18 and older who shared their age. Numbers describe Payout users, not the general U.S. population, and no individual user data is disclosed. Payout is a settlement-finder app, not a law firm, and this article is information, not legal advice.
