What is the Equifax fcra settlement about?
The Equifax settlement (Bradberry v. Equifax Information Services LLC) resolves allegations that Equifax violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by reporting the same debt collection account multiple times on consumers' credit reports — a practice known as duplicate reporting. Plaintiffs alleged this error artificially lowered their credit scores and caused financial harm by making them appear more indebted than they were. Equifax denies wrongdoing but agreed to a $2.2 million fund to settle.
In August and September 2022, Equifax mailed 'Duplicate Reporting Letters' to consumers it identified as potentially affected by the error. If you received one of those letters, you are likely a class member and may be eligible to claim up to $600 in cash by submitting a claim form before September 1, 2026. Class members who do not file a cash claim automatically receive six months of free Equifax Complete credit monitoring (including up to $500,000 in identity theft coverage) at no cost.
