TurboTax Settlement Claim Status and Checks

ByConnor Burd

The $141 million TurboTax settlement does not have a claim form in 2026. Eligible people were identified automatically and mailed checks in May 2023. Those checks paid about $29 to $30 for each covered tax year, with up to about $85 available for three years.

What happened to the TurboTax settlement?

Intuit agreed in 2022 to pay $141 million to resolve claims brought by all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Officials said certain customers paid TurboTax for tax years 2016 through 2018 even though they qualified for the IRS Free File Program. Intuit denied wrongdoing.

Who qualified for the TurboTax settlement?

The multistate settlement covered certain customers who paid to file a federal tax return through TurboTax for tax years 2016, 2017, or 2018 and qualified for the IRS Free File Program. The administrator used Intuit records to identify eligible people, so there was no application process.

The California Attorney General said eligible customers would receive an email from Rust Consulting before a check arrived. The Texas Attorney General gave the same automatic-payment instructions and warned people about phishing messages.

How much did the TurboTax settlement pay?

Officials estimated about $29 to $30 for each covered tax year. Someone eligible for one year could receive roughly $30, while someone eligible for all three years could receive up to about $85. The number of covered years controlled the check amount.

Why do searches still show a TurboTax claim form?

Search results mix at least two different TurboTax matters. One older class action required claims by October 28, 2013. The $141 million multistate settlement used automatic payments in 2023. A decade-old form cannot be used to claim the later payment.

An archived Top Class Actions listing describes the 2013 deadline. That page can still surface when someone searches for a TurboTax settlement claim. Check the settlement year, covered conduct, and administrator before entering personal information into any form.

What did people say about the checks?

People focused on the gap between the $141 million headline and the much smaller individual checks. In a specific r/classactions thread, the poster summarized the expected range as “$29 to $85.” That language matches the official per-year payment explanation.

Read the Reddit discussion about the TurboTax checks as personal commentary, not an eligibility source. ProPublica also posted the official scale on X, noting that 4.4 million customers would receive compensation. The state attorney general announcements remain the source for payment instructions.

Track the claims that are still open

Payout keeps current settlement deadlines in one place, so an expired story does not send you hunting for a closed form. Review eligibility and file free through the official administrator.

How can you verify a TurboTax settlement message?

A message about the 2023 distribution should match the official record: Rust Consulting handled automatic checks, no claim form was required, and nobody had to pay or provide account credentials. A new request that changes those terms deserves an independent check.

  1. Find the announcement on a state attorney general website, not through the message link.
  2. Compare the covered tax years and payment dates with the official announcement.
  3. Check whether the sender identifies Rust Consulting and the correct settlement.
  4. Reject any request for a filing fee, gift card, cryptocurrency, or banking password.
  5. Call a phone number published by an attorney general or the administrator, not a number inside an unexpected text.

A legitimate settlement payment never requires an upfront fee. Our guide to checking whether a settlement notice is real covers the sender, case name, court record, administrator, and official website.

What can you do with an old uncashed check?

The original TurboTax checks had to be cashed within 90 days, so that window ended in 2023. An old check should not be deposited without verification, and no official source reviewed for this guide promises a reissue in 2026.

Start with the sender and notice you already have. Then locate the administrator through a state attorney general page and ask whether the distribution still accepts reissue requests. Do not mail the original check or send identity documents until you have confirmed the address independently. Our settlement check reissue guide explains the records an administrator may ask for.

What does Payout do in this process?

Payout is a settlement-discovery app, not a law firm, and it does not give legal advice. Payout can help you find and track open claims, but an official administrator decides eligibility, reviews submissions, and sends payments. Filing is free directly with the administrator. Payout cannot guarantee approval, timing, or a payment amount.
